The whole assembly is $200 from a non-OEM manufacturer. The installation process is 4+ hours by good home mechanics.

It's just one more thing to fix on the list.

This year I'll need to put $3000 of parts (inc. tires) into the car.

I'm deep into the land of diminishing returns.

Just be glad your on the right side of the investment. Most people dump the money in and then something expensive breaks. :lol:

Am I an idiot for looking at a 2003 325xi wagon (w/ 114k) to replace my 2003 325i sedan (w/207k)?

Nope... If the mileage were equivalent I might have a different feeling but if the money makes sense why not?

Depends what your priorities are, I suppose.

You are familiar with the 3 series which counts for something in my books. Also a mk4 isn't exactly rewarding to drive, if you do enjoy the BMW for that you may find yourself hating the VW after the honeymoon period of having something new subsides.

Found a new mechanic.

Former dealer tech. Labour rate is 56% of the dealer. Parts are cheaper. Getting brakes and PCV for the same price as a single one of those jobs at the dealer.

Also, he just bought a Z3 M Coupe… into which he is swapping a Turbo 2JZ. Expecting 10.5 in the 1/4.

I hope he's a good driver/knows how to drag race. Running a 10.5 is a lot more skill than one might think. Lol

Enough HP to pull that off would make for some serious traction challenges in a chassis that short/light as well.

Good find though, a mechanic you can trust at a reasonable rate is invaluable. I think once Klaus is too old to work I'm done with VWs lol

After doing the PCV and All brakes + Parking brake for 1/2 BMW price with top quality OEM (Zimmerman, Brembo, Textar) or OE parts, I'm sold on this guy.

Swapped out the DISA valve (intake flapper) with a new OE unit and he didn't charge any extra labour (had to be removed when installing the PCV anyway). Price on the OE DISA was his original sale purchase price rather than current BMW part price (550 retail, 440 his price, I got it for 380).

In other news, he has inspected everything and came up with nothing more than the BMW dealer mechanics came up with.

I know I'm getting close to the time where it's all going to go south very quickly, but if I can spend <$3k per year, it's still less than a car payment on a car I don't really want. I'd pay more to keep this functional to have the driving dynamics and have it be a known quantity (repair wise and history wise) than get into something with an unknown/sketchy history.
