pragmatism's a bitch

Postby professor science » Thu Jan 10, 2008 11:09 am

I'm letting the cat out of the bag. The '03 325i is mine.

But I don't want it. I know I am a retard for wanting to sell it, but if anything goes wrong with this car, I don't have the money to repair it. Plain and simple, it is too expensive for my current financial situation.

Fair Market Value: $22k

2003 325i - Sport + Premium Package - 68,000 kilometres
- OEM 17" Wheels
- Sport Suspension
- Leather Interior
- Sport Seats
- Harmann Kardon 10 Speaker Stereo

I've gone over what I want from a car before: here, and I am back at those crossroads. When I found out about this a little while ago, I rekindled the deliberation and came up with a few possibilities:

- Audi TT 225 Coupe
- Audi A6 Allroad
- MkV Jetta TDI
- Subaru WRX...

And as I thought about it more and more, what I am willing to spend is diminishing, such that I can be responsible to myself. I've got about 6k worth of debt (i know... that's nothing) but my mind can't handle being in the negative. If I can keep financial responsibilities, I can set myself up to build that dream Mk3 i've outlined before, and for this to happen I need something that is deadnuts reliable, and affordable. Keeping the responsibility to myself, as a car guy and a skier, I need something rugged (as in i can throw my shit into it and not worry about scratching the plastic) and versatile.

So I came up with the following:

- Mk4 TDI Wagon
- B6 A4 Wagon
- Mini Cooper (S or no S)
- Protege 5
- Rabbit/Jetta
- City Golf (older mk4 version, i don't want anything to do with the chinese shit that's here now)

I'll post more later! I need to go to class now

I'm going to get flamed for this buuut... get something Japanese as a daily driver. You wallet will love you. Cheap to maintain, reliable, rugged.

That way, you know you're not going to be dumping unnecessary cash for repairs on your daily. Instead you can focus on the MK3.

Say it takes you a year to finish the MK3.... For that year drive the Japanese, once the MK3 is done, sell the Japanese (it probably won't be taking a big hit in depreciation) and then get something nicer/more fun.

that's kinda why I was looking at the protege 5, maybe that subaru wouldn't be so bad afterall? pontiac vibe/toyota matrix?

^^ what he said.

Joanna's MKIV TDi has been the most economical car I've every owned. 100,000 kms 10ish oil changes, and that's it.
In the last 2+ years it's dropped in value about $2000 - $2500 ish.

oh, and 45+ mpg. 8)
