Refurb'n the Buddies...

Postby square head » Mon Jan 28, 2008 8:46 am

Fronts are currenty 17 x 8 with a 5 mm spacer.
Spacer is not required. It is only there for stance optimization.

Should I go 17 x 8.5 or 9?
I don't want to run the 5 mm spacer anymore.

Right now I'm leaning towards 9.

I should have put the backs on the front before storage.

Tires will still be 205-40-17. Maybe 205-45-17 for closer to proper stock rolling diameter.

I don't intend on doing nutty fender work ever. Maybe a slight pull but not a Tristan :)

the offsets will remain the same right? all additional width will be added to the outer lip? I feel the 9 would need the 40... it's gonna be borderline too much... you don't wan't as much *tread* poking in the front.

yeah rick, i hear that.

if all you want is to eliminate the spacer, keep everything the way it is and get the 8.5s (assuming you are simply adding 0.5 to the outside)

that will be like adding a 12.5mm spacer :S

if the barrels are being widened such that the 0.5 will be on either side, then you will be almost exactly the same as where you are now (out an extra 1.7mm or something like that)

9s might be too much

if you want the 9s you'll have to add almost 3/4" inside and 1/4" outside to keep the same "frontspacing" as you have now. (hub face to wheel face)

so they must have 1/4" increments in barrel-half widths?

You'd think so.

http://www.budnik.com/roadwheelitem.asp ... d=547&pg=2

They only offer 17 x 8 and 17 x 9.5 are their "standard".

Anything in between requires a re-tooling ($). The best they can do is 1/2" lip variance.

Gettin' a quote on it now...

I'm not 100% happy with the stance yet. The front lips are pretty hacked up.

Finally got a hold of my boy at Budnik...

They charge $150 to relip (to your standard lip dimension)

As standard they only can do 17 x 8 and 17 x 9.5 (which mine are)

To go to 17 x 8.5 in the front they take the 9.5 lip, cut, lathe and weld ($200 / wheel)

To bring my buddies to a 17 x 8.5 it will take (2 x (150+200)) = $700 (ouch)

***

LIGHT BULB!

I should run 16's in the front!

Thoughts?

would a good looking 16" wheel/tire combo leave wheel gap when the front skirt is on the ground?

I would shoot for same overall rolling diameter (maybe a tad smaller).

F - 16 x 9 with 205-45-16 (If that tire even exists...)

R - 17 x 9.5 with 215-40-17

I have larger tires in the rear on my corrado, and it looks good to *me*
however the jetta is such a different car, so I don't know how it would turn out.

then again, I like how it looks now, why change it? *shrug*
a price beyond $150/wheel wouldn't be justifiable to me.
but if you see it different, go for it.

How much are 16s + tires going to cost?

I would think it would be much more than $700 and this, to me, makes no sense.

Plus, with 16s in the front you would need to be low as shit, and I don't know if the proportionality, from front to back, would work.

I would either do the 17x9s or stick with what you have.

You should put holes in the buds - asymetrico style. Different diameters at different radii....

Need new rubber anyway...

Waiting for his quote on 16's...

Keep in mind if I get the 16's I'll have the option to run either 16 or 17 in the front. I like this option.

Need to push forward. Need to innovate. But only it it looks great.

Judging by pictures of how your car dumps right now I think the increased amount of tire showing might look akward... time for someone to break out a p-chop.

Steve, Don't know if you've seen/used this before but it's good for offset and tire size ideas.

http://users.pandora.be/Goffin/banden.xls

Also if you want me to bring over a 16x9 for you to trial fit I could drop off a rim at Randy's. The tire size would be off but better than nothing for comparison before dropping monies on a pair of 16's.

hhhhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmM...............................

Firstly... how much space do you have at the front of that side skirt to the earth now? I couldn't fit my index finger under it at h2O when it was parked on the grass...front valence is close too. So that space is the most you can possibly drop it, right? Keep that in mind.

I know you and I know you need the front to be lower than the rear (at the least even with the rear) from rim to fender. Even a 205 45 16 is still almost 3.5cm shorter than a 215 40 17 negating any stretch differences. To keep the same rim to fender you have to drop that amount at the very least. 1/2 will be done automatically and the suspension will have to find the other 1/2, right? Now you have the matter of a 16x9 wearing a 205 45.
Image
Kinda chunky for what's going on in this...Also remember where the new found width is gonna have it sitting. And the reason this thread started is because you wanted more stretch on the fronts... see where I'm going with this?
