Ouch!

Postby Mandeep D » Wed Dec 19, 2012 11:00 pm

I got home tonight and Jo informed me that another car kicked up a rock, and it hit her car. No big deal, says I, and I go have a look.

If you are familiar with the 8P platform, you know that the entire roof is glass. The rock hit maybe 50mm above the windshield, and the first glad panel exploded :(

I bet this is gonna be expen$ive!

I'll post pics if I'm ever near it in the daylight again....

I was afraid to click when seeing the thread title...

That blows! That are the odds!? I'm pretty good at being afraid of expenses due to fanciness but this is one that never occurred to me.

Makes me think of these:

I remember playing dirt @ Randy's and blowing the entire roof out of the car (Citroen C4).

Glass roof replacement never occurred to me, but looking at the number of stone chips I have within 4" of the windshield, now I may never buy a car with one.

Qutoe from the dealer: $350 for the part, and about the same for labor, so $800. Not as bad as I was expecting... but still a lot more than $0 for a stone chip on a steel roof.....

I'm going to look at the Bentley to see how bad replacement is, I might try to tackle myself since I can still get parts through my Dad at %15 off I think :)

Another extreme solution. http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/a3-s3-sportback-8p-chassis/139514-amar-akoyas-a3-build-panoramic-roof-retrofit.html

Might give you a better idea of how things go together though. :)

Wow - that's a lot of work!

Looks like the panel is at least partially glued in..... might have to bite the bullet and have the dealer do it.. :(

Turned out not to be too bad. $600 through the dealer. Shrug.

Seeing how I have larger stone chips on my roof than the hood, I think it must happen often.
