The tdi completely died on the way home tonight. When trying ti restart, it sounded like the timing belt went on vacation. Had it towed home.
Here's to hoping there's no internal damage :(

Update

Postby Dreamstate » Mon Jan 30, 2012 12:20 am

It's in Jason's opinion that the tensioner was installed incorrectly. Either the tab wasn't set in the groove or the nut wasn't torqued properly. He came by to look at it and saw it at first glance.
Minimum of four bent valves. Taking it to his shop tomorrow. We will see upon disassembly if the tensioner is faulty and jumped out of the hole on its own or if it was indeed installed wrong.

Not his fault obviously. He went above and beyond to get the tdi ready for sale.

:( ... Sucks indeed.

I wouldn't blame a repair that was done, I'm assuming many many km's ago either.

It sucks when critical parts fail unexpectedly... :(

Yeah I drove a LOT of KMs on it since the replacement.

It was all replaced at JUST over 150k.

I don't know how these tensioners go in but Spencer said the pin was never pulled out and the bolt was torqued correctly, unless the wrench was out of spec.

He also told me this was the fourth or fifth he had done with that tensioner and no one else has had issues?

I'm pretty pissed that this happened on something that I had gone and sorted out. Don't know what to say.

Finished up at 2am last night and made it to work this morning with no issues.
After driving a Yaris an entire week made me appreciate the MKIV so much more.

It always amazes me the difference between how cars feel.

Even my sister prefers driving a 2000 Jetta TDI vs her 08 Yaris.
