White stuff has started to fly.

Dropping off car at Calgary Auto Works to get winter tires installed on the stock 15s.

While it's there, getting the rear brakes serviced, getting new ABS module installed, and getting a Stage1+ tune.

Should be fun in the snow. :)

Yeah I'm interested to see how it changes the car!

I gave it some more thought (inevitable while working with numbers in excel for hours), and I realized it's probably better to improve the car as things break on it and increasing its function, than reducing its function.

Essentially:

- Stage 1
- Techtonics downpipe / test pipe (2.5"), and 2.5" full exhaust with dual Borlas
(read: SRT-4 style burbles and pops, no e-tests, minuswhale)
- 255/35/18 ultra sticky tires (Toyo R1R, Advans?) on the Tarmacs for a low but square profile
- ST coilovers but not dumped, just to give it a newer car stance
- S4/S6 OE strut bar
- S4 sway bar
- S4 engine mounts
- beefier side mount intercooler?
- if K03 blows, replace with K04

Great thing is there's always someone parting an S4 around here so that should make the hunt for parts more fun and gradual.

Any other cheap/bolt-on performance parts that make a car more useable for spirited mountain cruises, yet retains daily function?

Seats dude. A quick way to a sportier feel. Grab some stock high bolstered GTI cloth seats and hook up the factory heat and wire in for the powered functions.

Unfortunately the only seats that are bolt-in on these Passats are seats from an A6, which means seats from an S6 work.

If i could get black leather S6 seats, I would snag a rear leather bench from the wreckers and call it a day. Would be ballerific.

Are those MK4 Recaros that come in GTIs and GLIs heated?!?! :|

Wonder how far off they are from the black colour of the velour/mousefur in the car currently?

If I was balling I'd grab this Recaro Passat rear bench:

And use these fronts with it (bolt-in).

Also the car would be on 3 piece twists at that point too.

With the Subaru kids in easy reach, I think conversion brackets for a MK5 seat would be a snap. I would do it for you in my driveway if you were in the area.

Good call on that. I guess at that point I could find any ol heated Recaro driver seat and that would work well!

Dropped Passat off yesterday to address the followings:

- Install 15" winter tires from Volvo S40 wheels onto the 15" wheels on the Passat (yay savings)
- Rear brakes (sound a bit worn/warped)
- Front pads (P/O didn't use correct ones with pad thickness sensors)
- ABS module
- Oil change
- Stage 1 tune
- Valve cover gasket
- Worn out flex pipe (this made doing the full exhaust ultra tempting)

Addressing all of the above comes to $2700, which means the car has cost me a total of $5400 to date (including purchase of car). Not terrible!

Also, I just grabbed 1552 ST coilovers for a good deal last night. The cupkit I had delivers some wicked-bad rake and that would be poop for rolling on Tarmacs with... not much interest on the Tarmacs atm but I should expect that anyway.

Was really REALLY hard to not get the Stage 2 which required installation of a 2.5" downpipe / cat delete / 2.5" exhaust... ESPECIALLY since a full stainless Techtonics system is available in town here at Concept1...

I think the quiet burble that you would get with essentially a straight pipe with two Borlas would be a beautiful sound???

If the car behaves another 12 months then yeah I'll do Stage 2 with the full 2.5" and upgrade the side mount intercooler.
($1100 for required exhaust, $600 for the required TT 225 injectors).

If turbo blows up then K04.
($900)

Clutch is going to need doing in the next 12 months also

I think these would look the hotness with orange turn signals and side markers, and black B5.5 mirrors (and the tarmacs + coils)

Hmm... So Audi Allroad flares fit the B5 Passats pretty much perfectly.

No surprise really since the B5 Passat is an A4 in terms of underpinnings, but an A6 in terms of chassis.

Could you imagine running 255-35-18s all around (low pro and wide), on the tarmacs with big ol spacers, and textured flares to go with the textured front lip and sideskirts?

To help your imagination:

I think that would make one GNARLY looking B5 Passat!!!

This is quickly turning into the BTCC vision I had for the Passat...

Wonder what kind of decals I could get away with slapping all over this thing? Perhaps the non-Volvo specific badging from that BTCC vinyl decal set?

YO CAN ANYONE GET ME THE VECTOR FILE FOR THE JK CREST?

I wanna make two large-ass ones on my doors for this race-passat in black.

Failing that do I just get someone here to trace it?

Did some more digging, looks like a bit of cutting is involved, but this isn't a terrible amount of work to achieve such a look:

As you can see in this pic below, some re-radiusing is required, and cutting of the Votex sideskirt :/

rears appear to fit better than fronts

Cutting required

3cm off the skirts front and rear

Some fiberglass fun, though if you're painting with texture, probably more forgiving anyway

Black textured flares on a silver car? Rub strips to match?

YUP! they would be black textured, and so would the votex side skirts that I have... and so would the rub strips likely.

Sounds VERY MK2 DONT IT?

Normally I'd be scared to hack a car like this guy has done above, but with some good mock up, and knowing he took 3cm off the front of the skirt and 3cm of the rear is WAY better than going at it blind. Totally worth doing in my books.

It will be dope... and a BTCC touring wing to top it off as a shout out to Rob.
