Found the source of the intermittent probs on the driver door lock on das auto... but... not sure which latch it is that the system is being told is malfunctioning. This will be identified with das vag-com (Thanks again Tristan).

No problem. Saved me tons of grief when the A3 had the random alarm issues. Turned out to be the "broken glass" sensor on the rear window. (Really just used the rear defog ciruit)

If it wasn't for Vagcom, I would have probably never figured out why on random days, at a random times the alarm would go off.

Hopefully back in '99 the VAGCOM info is good enough to use!

Got a rock chip in my windshield... gotta get it filled before it turns to a crack.

Not looking forward to the front end of this car getting riddled with stone chips this winter. :(

Just gonna have to maintain lots of distance and drive slows!

Spray on clear bras are available at Canadian Tire. Not sure of how good they are, but it's cheap and needed in Alberta.

Well car goes in to get cup kit installed and chipped next week (just in time for winter?). Upper strut mounts are getting le-noisy so want to get that addressed as well as sort out the ABS sensor which is currently pooched.

So I will try and get Mike's friend Joe or someone else who does clear bras to go in and do the hood, bumper and fenders while it's in the shop perhaps.

Will likely be pricey but I am REALLY baby-ing this Passat... Heck I even warm it up so that the oil is all warm for the turbo. With 160k on the clock right now, I hope it's not unreasonable to expect to go another 100k without major works needed?

On that note, anyone out there know folks with 1.8Ts and such that have stayed on top of their maintenance schedule without catastrophic failure before 300k?

Really love this car :(

Is it common for 1.8t's to blow up before 300k? This is news to me.

Sure there's the sludge problem, but 99% of the population uses recycled oil from economy lube as well.

My 1.8t, albeit not stock, has not given me any real troubles and I'm at 220k.

I worded that incorrectly. Basically just wondering what expected lifespan on these motors is if you are diligent with maintenance.

So using full synth = no sludge problem?

How have you modified your 1.8T? Wait what do you have a 1.8T in??

It takes too long to type out it's name so it rarely gets internet attention.

B5A41.8TGT28BT.

Its a unitronic, BT440CC kit for argument sake. It gets groceries quickly while scaring little kids for safety reasons.

What's in this unitronic kit?

I'm assuming your B5 is later than 1999?

Oh man to have a big turbo in this Passat would be wild.

It's a 2001. And it's not really a "kit" in terms of you can purchase it, but it's got the uni software with all the required upgrades listed in here. http://www.unitronic-chipped.com/ecu-tu ... hp-bt440cc

I look forward to snowy days where no one else will venture out of their driveways. :)

If the Tarmacs don't sell... I kinda want one of these two (obnoxious) styles of mirrors for the car. They sell with Passat-specific mounting plates for easy install.

DTM mirrors:

F1 style mirrors:

Of course, if Projektzwo mirrors could be found ANYWHERE for this car, that would probably be what I would swap em out for... And they would look good with the Tarmacs.

K so check this out... I wanted turn signal lights that matched the HID 5000k colour temp. BUT, I wanted them to flash orange. After some browsing these lights came up which snap back and forth between orange LEDs and the 5000k colour LEDs. I thought this was interesting because I figured one filament stays on while the other second filament would also snap on... The way these bulbs are set up, this is not the case... which is kind of nice, because you get this awesome deep orange glow in the fluted turn signals.

To match I popped in some orange LEDs on the marker lenses, which are also fluted in the same style that the front corner is. I'm MUY happy with it.

As well, they have some ULTRA weird ridiculously bright LED bulbs I found. The Passat has the fog-light switch wired to the city light bulbs. Fogs in the B5 were basically integrated into a dual filament high beam bulb originally, so I swapped the wire over in the headlamp plug to take over the city light instead. So anyway yea they have these bulbs that are a SINGLE eye burning LED. NO idea where these came from, but when I got the bulb I was like.... why is there only a single bulb? Anyway they are about as bright as my non-hid low beams were believe it or not...

Here's the ad for the bulb I speak of:

Here are some pics of the lighting in action:

After much thought I have decided to run the Tarmacs with the cup kit.

The cup kit has a bunch of rake to it, but I think it will be solved by the following:

225/40/18 front tires and 255/35/18 tires in the rear. The Tarmacs are 18x8.5 f and 18x9.5 r.

Should look more like this:

Image

Image

But the fronts on these FKs is a touch lower than what's seen above... it actually almost tucked the tires on Jesse's car with 18x9s rolling on 225/40s.

As well I have the Votex side skirts in my posession which I will slap on, and for mirrors I am just going to grab some more round looking factory 2004.5 Passat mirrors from the wreckers or on Ebay in black. They come with a blinker on the bottom half, so I will just replace that with a smoked mirror so it's not visible so much. Later on I can just put the Wolfsburg blank back in the fender and have the side view mirrors function as markers.

This is what they look like with the smoked lenses on:
Image

So the plan for spring is:

-Black 2004.5 mirrors with smoked signal lenses
-Install cup kit
-Install 255/35/18s on rear tarmacs
-Slap on Tarmacs
-Install Votex side skirts
-Stage 1+ chip (200hp up from current 150hp)
-Techtonics 2.5" exhaust w/ high flow cat and turn down tip
-Wastegate
-Some yellow high beam bulbs or yellow HIDs in the high beams for spirited mountain driving (HID low beams with the HID high beams on should be deer frightening bright!)

Should be fun!!!

So some browsing around, and I'm wondering if this kit, running an uprated SMIC could actually see 300hp?

Software - 280 to 310hp ($599):
http://www.revotechnik.com/product-deta ... G-9LvnF_AQ

Turbo kit - rated 350hp ($2379):
http://www.uspmotorsports.com/GT28RS-Tu ... -1.8T.html

Side Mount IC:
http://www.tyrolsport.com/b5a4intercooler

Addn'al req:
Exhaust ($650)
550cc injectors ($225)
High flow fuel pump ($150)
Autometer column dual gauge pod ($50)
PODI boost gauge and a/f needle gauge ($308)
P3 OBD2 gauge ($399)

For $4000 on top of a car that I've only spent $2300 on, that'd be one heck of a sleeper.

Nvm turns out these bottom ends can't take much boost. Motor has to stay stock... MAYBE a Stage1+ chip doe.
