Seized drums?

Postby Maraschino Larry » Fri Apr 18, 2014 9:01 pm

Like an idiot I left the emergency brake on when I parked the escape. Never had an issue with it sticking, and I don't think that the issue is with the ebrake / cables, but I went to drive it and it's cemented in place.
90 percent sure the shoes and seized in place. Tips on fixing this?? Plan A right now is popping off the wheels, heating the drum with a propane torch and hammering the drum until they let go, and if that doesn't work hammering until I feel better. I really don't want to have to take the drum off and dick around with internals. I also thought about using a breaker bar between the wheel studs to ease/add tension on the shoes and their Springs in hopes that this would work it loose. If I remember correctly the springs bite more on rotation one way versus counter rotation?

Yeah, brake drums are some kind of crazy voodoo that I hate. But from what I remember, the ebrake grips a lot less in reverse.

Hammer time to the rescue! Didn't even have to remove the wheel... just hammered in the windows between the spokes, helps that they're in terrible shape and didn't matter if I missed.

Time to get this thing cleaned up and sold before it becomes one with the ground (not that that's ever happened before......)

Haha, will do. I'll make sure to park it over some weeds for maximum appeal.
