I don't think any of the diesels are.

Belt snapped on startup, so there's still hope. Fingers crossed :(

Good luck and hope there is no other damage.

Unfortunately I'm with T-bone on this one :( I'm 99% sure the AAZ is an interference motor... I don't think you can obtain a compression ratio high enough for a diesel while providing enough 'headroom' above the piston.

LMK if you want to buy back the AAZ I have... I'm pretty sure I want to go with something gaz

AAZ

Postby Dreamstate » Sat Feb 12, 2011 10:37 pm

Forgot to mention, the crank gear tooth wore off which just caused it to spin on the crank. Bullocks. I brought it to Weide and he put another crank gear on it because the crank "wasn't that bad". $440. Drove it for another few weeks with no problems.
Now I'm sitting on the side of the 401, with a distinct metal-on-metal sound echoing in my head. I guess the heart of the purple people eater will be bringing this one back to life.

The mechanic I towed it to was uncomfortable with VW diesels (?) so I had it towed out to Tavistock tonight. It's finally in good hands :)

AAZ

Postby Dreamstate » Fri Feb 18, 2011 11:09 am

I learned last night that there are differences in the early and late AAZs. From fuel pump gear to timing belt cover, we had to reuse many parts from the old engine. All is well though! Even though I forgot to put a lower rad hose clamp on. I found that out on the way to work this morning. It's amazing how far you can go just coasting down hills :)

Jason pulled apart the engine that he pulled to salvage some usable parts.
