Rinspeed Refinish

Postby square head » Sat Apr 11, 2009 11:45 am

Two Options:

A. Have the black rim refinished to look like the other three (typical OEM silver metallic). I risk it not being the exact same colour.

B. All the rims have slight curbage and are in need to refinishing. I intended on getting all four sprayed campenello white (entire rim) and then polishing the face myself (I haven't polished anything in a while). With the mirror caps, grille and trim in chrome the silver painted wheels don't do it for me.

Perhaps leave the entire rim white?

I'm doing to ditch the monster thule and grab a low profile but wide box colour matched. Considering painting valences white while I'm at it (maybe W12 front clip).

I plan on doing the calipers white, hubs black as well. Maybe teak calipers?

I value your styling opinions, otherwise I'd have it wings wested out.

Personally, I'd hesitate to paint the calipers white... sounds like a cleanliness nightmare. I think they'd look bad quick with brake dust and grease.

Regarding a box, I've considered talking to Garry Thompson on hwy 6 about making one from aluminum to match the contour of the roof... he used to work for my dad doing sheet metal, and is a true artist. He's currently hand making a 1932 Ford body from aluminum.

I thought by the time I spend $500 or $600 on a thule big enough to carry a stroller, plus a rack, it might still be cost effective. I really have no idea though.

First off you need not worry about adding tacky bits of plastic to the body.

I think you should start with doing the entire wheel in white and rocking it for a while... if you don't love it polishing the faces will obviously look great. On that note white calipers won't work, so I'd do black.

This morning I am feeling like rocking the white. White has been out of style for quite sometime. I think it would look stunning and be a touch of a throw back.

I agree the white brakes are not practical. The calipers are such a thing of beauty. It would be almost a crime not to accent them somehow... Red is too typical and won't look right with the interior color. Perhaps teak?

I'm also considering getting some meatier tires. The contis look awesome (semi strech, euro look). Typical SUV low profiles have silly tread patterns and that bulbous look. Currently running 315-25-23. Gonna check ebay for some 315-30-23 perhaps and run the numbers in the wheel calculator tool.

For some reason a very light plaid design on the calipers seems to be a good idea in my head.

You know how much I love white wheels... I can hardly resist painting any wheel white.

BTW white wheels are back in vogue hard for '09. Part of the motorsports blow up as I predicted early last year.

Teak calipers could work... how about a light teak/dark teak hounds tooth instead of plaid? 8)

After flogging Mansory and Jonari and every other previous Rinspeed dealer, I have decided to go for this look:

Except a Touareg :)

Helmut for painting Randy? Should I prep myself perhaps?

I may get valences / side skirts done at the same time... Thoughts?

Survey says that 315/25-23 Contis were problematic on SUV's. Multiple sources suggest 295/30-23 Nittos instead.

On second thought...

Not a fan of the front valence painted white:

I like the sides profile though.

I'd seriously reconsider painting your lowers.

You like them painted Rick? The front looks goofy with all the little dots for parking sensors and the duckbillish looking thing at the bottom.

Valences / lowers are staying textured.

I really want to buy a second set of struts, disect and cut up / remove bump stops. Then install some suspension position linakes to fool the SCU big time. I would like the off-road setting to be driveable ride height. Sport would be pushing my luck low. Loading would be parked / photoshoot.

When I get sick of the all white look, I'll polish the face. Randy mentioned that powder is nearly impossible to get rid of. Powder coating is overated in my oppinion unless it is under your hood.
