cut and lower

Postby tripwalking » Wed Feb 04, 2009 1:48 pm

Hi.

On the 5.5 front strut, the bottom attachment point is a formed claw-looking thing that bolts to the spindle or control arm, somewhere around there. Anyone know why we couldn't take an inch or two out of that rod that attaches the formed claw to the shock, then weld er back up? An outer sleeve that would slip over top of the rod would make it a lot stronger.

Then you've got a lowered car with the same ride quality. Although I would like different springs to stiffen it up. Maybe a coil will do the trick.

It also looks easy enough to make an air bag mount in the same location if in the future my kids or wife don't require any more money.

An inch would probably be okay.
Maybe keep an eye out for used lowering springs.

There was a doubt that it would fit in a 4motion car.

Here are the part numbers that the 4Motion people would need. Thanks!!

BE5-6511-H0 - Rear (Audi A6 4WD SP Rear 05/00-)
BE5-6512-H0 - Front (VW Passat Front Sport)

I'm just going to have to take them off the car and see what I can do with them. I can't even tell where the lower spring perch is... must be on the control arm?

I think to lower the rear I could do some trimming on the formed lower control arm... the lower attaching point is pretty close to the bottom of the arm, so I could trim it so the shock could slip through, then weld tabs to the bottom of the arm where the shock would bolt. The spring mounts around the shock, even on the rear, and the lower mount is pretty close to the rear axle already so I don't see lowering it that way. I'd box in the control arm where necessary after it was cut.

Did you pick up a chicken??

that's golden. I'm not going in tonight... too late. Need to do a bit more research on dead coils or how much to take out of the strut.

Should have kartell shop night again!

Yes, I did pick it up. Your chickens are weird DW.
I walk into the back yard and they run up like cats and mull around my feet.

Here's another with my wheels and the H&R springs:

Another inch would look respectable. I'm sure there'll be some dead coil action to attack.

Cut them directly in half. Then you will have two sets of springs.
