Update

Postby Dreamstate » Tue Jul 22, 2008 1:40 pm

I continue to be baffled by low mercedes pricing

$88 Front door window rubber (the channel the window runs up into, 3 sides)
$88 Rear door window rubber
$78 quarter window rubber seal

this for a car that came out over forty years ago

So I could buy all that for $508, refreshing all that cracked/oversprayed/falling off rubber
Next I would buy the front and rear window seals, the car would look 100x better.

then:
aba turbo mk2 golf, vr6 mk2 golf, vr6 turbo corrado.. all of these I have worked on in my dad's garage.
dealing with rusty bolts, adjusting things, replacing old parts. my dad tells me i'm wasting my money, he'll never work on an old car and doesn't know why I bother with them.

now:
after working on the benz for 6+ hours: "I'm not tired yet, I think we can get it done after supper"

also:
me - "I might do a little work on the interior yet, patch the ceiling, recover the seats"
dad - "You have to do the ceiling, definitely cover the seats in leather, I wouldn't spend less than $3000"

Excerpt from a funny moment at Canadian Tire with Randy today........

Randy: Do you have a fuel filter like this?
CanTire Kid: What car is it from?
Randy: [rolls eyes] You won't have it in your system.
CanTire Kid: I'll just see if we do. What year?
Randy: 1976
CanTire Kid: What Car?
Randy: Mercedes. 300D
CanTire Kid: Is that like a Ford or a GM?

Randy: Uh, it's a Mercedes.
Kid: Your car isn't in our system.
Randy: :|

After a little exploratory surgery, i have found *caverns* behind the 32 year old stock speakers.
In theory, I could flush fit 10" subs in there. Things are looking very good for the focal components.

I can make a good sounding system without poking out my eye on a speaker when I hit the brakes.

It probably sounds great, but it doesn't look so good. I want the benz to appear stock.

I was tired of all the trunks done in stretch gray carpet, so I said "Why not an exotic wood with a strong grain?" I picked Zebra Wood from South Africa. This wood once cut is soaked in elephant manure for three months to darken up the grain. (When you sand this wood, it smells very bad).

I was thinking of the older configuration, where they used to rise up out of the dash = ultrastock (when off)

Yes, that was pretty neat.
However, that would mean I would have to cut the dash. :(
