Build: Elektro-panzer

Postby Mandeep D » Sun Sep 27, 2009 10:21 pm

Here's where I document the journey of converting my ancient carbon-monoxide spewing snowblower into a sleek electric cordless snow-repositioning unit.

I've used it for two winters, and have worked out most of the bugs, but the drivetrain needs rebuilding or replacing. Enter the electric wheelchair; the plan is to use the controls and gear motors from the chair to drive the tracks independently like a tank. The original blower drivetrain doesn't steer, so handling it was a bit of a chore.

For driving the 2 stage auger / thrower, I plan to repurpose an electric lawnmower motor & controls, as it should have a dead-man switch for safety as well as speed control.

Some pics for starters:

+1, what about a GPS unit to have it drive itself to each of our driveways and clean those up too :P

1. Yes, you can come over. Before the snow falls even!
b. I don't think the batteries will take is to T.O. Gregosh! Projected range is 20kms with no blowing tho, so the KW area is a go.

Update: the PO said the batteries were pooched, and he was right. I got a 2nd deep cycle spiral cell last night (runs on 24V) & rigged them up to test. It lives! I was cruising around last night in the garage :D

I expect this to end up costing about $600, including the original purchase of the blower. At the end I'll also have a 8hp gas motor, and a wheelchair frame left over

I was thinking more along the lines of a sponsorship from Steven King, but Coors and Centrum would keep Dave hydrated, and multivitamineralized!

Belated update:
I began the teardown of both machines & picekd up the blower drive motor, a "5hp" 24V. I picked up the mounted bearings, hubs, sprockets, chain etc. from TSC last week.

The Mayhem a couple weeks ago:

Blower drive motor:

Track drive parts:

Collection of expensive/dead batteries:

The stripped down hull. The track drive components will be going in here, and the batteries/controls will sit up top where the gas engine was:

The inevitable:

This weekend I'll be tearing down the gearheads to turn down / shorten the output shafts. Also the hubs need machining in order to pack everthing into the tiny hull. Later I'll post my progress from the weekend and some shots of the CAD models.

Didn't get much done last weekend, but I did get all the turning done on dads lathe. Through the week i managed to put the repaired bogey back together & got the split driveshafts installed. Today is finishing off the hull mods, spacers then it's assembly time for the drivetrain!

I also mocked up the blower drive motor & tested it for power (read: dangerous). It looks like it has lots of guts & my calculations confirm it will run at exactly the same speed as originally designed :). When I have a moment I'll post the video.

Success!! Sort of... I got the base back together for a test drive. I knew I should've had an offset link in the drive chains, but I wanted to see some action after working on it for two days! It jumps so much I think it may have helped break the welds on one of the sprockets :(

Before it broke it was working very nicely :D

It'll be all fixed tomorrow night and videos will follow!
